 SETTLING IN

Urlingford Community Childcare aims to make settling in the centre an enjoyable and exciting experience for children and parents and a positive experience for all concerned

The “settling in” is a service we offer to both you and your child. As you know starting in a new school is a overwhelming experience and our settling in procedure aims to make it as easy as possible. It’s a brilliant opportunity to get to meet the staff, to know your child’s routine whilst at pre-school and also to ask any questions and fill us in on any additional needs or concerns you may have around your child’s development and care.
It also gives the child time to get to know us and the other children gradually whilst having the security of having you with them. Each child is settled individually and will eventually get to understand that you go and come back and hopefully become happy and secure whilst in our care.
The settling in process normally starts with both you and your child coming along to pre-school for an hour. This allows the child to look around and weigh us up knowing your there with him/her. Next session we normally try to get you out for a few minutes into our parent’s/ staff room, and then return after a short time. This helps the child understand you go but come back. Gradually this time away is extended until the child is happy to let you go and stay with us. Parents/carers are required to stay with their child in the centre until the child is comfortable on his/her own.
We have found in the past that children who are settled in this way are happy, secure and are confident when the time comes for them to go to school. Each child is individual and the time it takes to settle varies. But this time is a valuable investment in your child’s confidence and self esteem. It helps them come to terms with separation and helps them become comfortable with their new school, staff and the other children. The parents/carers are always welcome at any time.
We encourage parents to meet with staff if there is anything they do not understand or which they may not agree with.
